Follow up on this Success:
After reboot it turned out that USB did not work anymore. Resetting CMOS
(just shortcutting the CLR_CMOS jumper on the motherboard) did the trick.

Old version of BIOS rom: F3
New version of BIOS rom: F9
motherboard revision: rev. 1.0

I actually did put the backup BIOS rom back and saw that everything was
working normal again, but after advice on the IRC channel I flashed the F9
version and did reset CMOS.
