My understanding is that there is no recognition in law for the use of 
(c). The law only recognises the actual copyright symbol ie 'c' inside a 
circle. So the use of (c) can actually be harmful as it can interfere 
with legally defined phrases.

The limitations of ASCII are not the concern of the law.
