There exist sot23-6 SPI *EEPROM* chips with the usual EEPROM densities
of a few kilobits, but I don't think there exist any NOR *flash* chips
with such a package. Of course it could be a custom package but I won't
believe it until I see it :)

I believe that nvflash is operating on an entirely different chip than
you do externally with flashrom (I presume you have hooked up an
external programmer to the chip). You should look out for a SOIC-8
chip. Either that or a BGA chip that won't be very easy to interact
with externally...
